"This metal can only be... space titanium!" - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

Ah, the simplicity & naivete of science fiction in the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Flying cars, laser pistols, moon bases, food pills, aliens with silly foreheads, spaceships as either flying saucers or just plain rockets...

That is that world. It's a world where it is perpetually 2001 or near enough - the beginning of what was envisioned at the time to be a truly new, unique and positive era. Well, if aliens destroying cities, moons blasting out of orbit and rubber monsters (giant or otherwise) populating the globe can be described as "positive".

As a whole, however, the campaign is an upbeat one. The troubles of the modern world may still exist, but in lesser form and emminently easier to deal with. In addition, although there are long-arcing events, problems tend not to drag on for years to decades. Just some know-how, gumption and good 'ole human spirit and the bad guys fall like ten pins. It is a light hearted universe; do not confuse that with "silly", else the bad guys will use that to their best advantage.

The material to draw upon is enormous. Most science fiction from the era, whether it be American, Japanese or other, if it wasn't particularly dark fits well. Movies are the primary source, but not to be discounter are comics and scifi literature. In fact, from the point of view of the campaign, most anything that you find from that era, if it doesn't overtly contradict such a future or collide too painfully with other fiction, can be considered cannon. Note that, as the GM, I always feel free to change details. I may not like them, see another way to tell the story better, or just like to aggravate players who think IMDB will tell them all they know...

Thus far I've sadly had more talk about the game than actual play. Thus far the only real event that can be considered to be part of this gameworld is my game from DunDraCon 32 - "Tales from the Future that Never Was: Destroy All Monsters 2". The description read:

It's 2001. Godzilla, Rodan and the others have escaped from Monster Island, wreaking great havoc! Even your great powers are no match! Or... are they?

Within the story the characters worked to repulse a mult-alien alliance invasion that had yet again grabbed control of Earth's monsters. Nowhere near powerful enough to face even the weaker monsters face to face, Doctor Serizawa of the Earth Defense Force showed the characters his invention to right this - his "Giganto ray". Although it would only work on superhumans - normal humans did not have the constitution for the incredible strain it produced - the PCs found themselves the same sizes and commensurate in strength as the controlled monsters. After much trial, tribulation post monster mash the PCs were able to track down the perpetrators and drive them back to their homes, plus return the monsters to their safe spots on Monster Island.

The next Chapter in this saga is happening at DunDraCon 34, entitled "Tales from the Future that Never Was: Return of the The Eye Creatures". The description reads:

An enemy from the past has returned... again! Their odd powers... very strange! Their name... purposefully redundant, or redundantly purposeful? More importantly, of what import is their return?

You have been contacted, in whatever way most efficient given your conceptions, by the EDF. Depending on your background you will start the game with some foreknowledge of what awaits you and your situation. You do know that the world has seen more than it's share of aliens - many hostile, but enough not and even friendly such that you don't want to assume too much. Hopefully, this time will see good fortune...

The game is here and I'm game # 504.
